Ramakrishna Mission Residential High School

         The Residential High School has five classes from Standard 6 to 10 in Tamil medium instruction.

Admissions

         Admissions are generally made in the VI standard on the basis of poverty cum merit. Applications are received from all over Tamilnadu. After an entrance test the deserving candidates were selected as per orphan/destitute status whose family income falls below poverty line.

Strength

         The strength of the school stood at 250 at present and out of this 206 belong to Backward/Most Backward communities and 35 belong to SC/ST and 9 belong to O.C.

Results

         The School has achieved 100% success in the SSLC examination held in March 2012. With 43 boys appearing in the final examinations. 23 students scored more than 400 marks out of 500. Master D.Thayumanavan came first scoring 468 out of 500. The Home honoured the teachers whose students performed exceptionally well. They recieved cash prize of Rs.1000/- each.

Computer Education

         Computer Science is taught to the students from Standard 6th to 10th with a graded syllabus. Our Computer laboratory is equipped with 25 PCs and a Broadband Internet Conection.

Crafts

         Spinning and Weaving and Gardening are taught to the students to develop practical skills and inculcate dignity of labour in their minds.

Hindi

         Hindi is taught to the 22 students from class VIII by a well wisher Smt.Geetha. On 12-08-2012 the students attended Prathamic exam conducted by Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Madras. All of them passed in the exam with good marks.

Activity Clubs

         The School has the following units namely Tamil literary Association, Maths Club and Science Club working under the guidance of the respective teachers. The students are given training to develop their skills.

Drawing Class

         Sri Saktivel, a qualified artist has been taking drawing for our school students on 3 days every week.

Harmonium & Tabla Class

         Weekly 3 days Mr.Louise a qualified music teacher is taking harmonium classes for our school students.

Band set

         The School has a full-fldged band set and boys are given training regularly at the weekends by Sri Daniel.

Mathematics Lab

          A new mathematics lab was inaugurated in the High School campus. Math Lab offers Multiple Teaching and Learning Aids as well as a complete theme based ambience which helps students to visualize and feel mathematics. Learning aids comprise of Technology Applications, Videos, Manipulative, Measuring Instruments, Tables, Charts etc. A mathematics theme based ambience is created complete with tables, chairs, posters, floor tiles etc.

          Based on ‘Imagination, Investigation and Interaction?? it provides an opportunity to students to understand, internalize, discover and verify the basic mathematical and geometrical concepts through concrete objects and situations. The laboratory also encourages the students to think, discuss amongst themselves as well as with the teacher, and assimilate concepts.

Science Park

          Science Park is a cluster of open air Science gadgets installed permanently all meant for play way learning of science. Science Park is an innovative concept of teaching Science in an informal way. The basic concept of science park enhancing the tendency of the children to play more than to read.

          In Science Park, aesthetically designed and ruggedly fabricated science gadgets are installed permanently to benefit students by covering many topics in science. To name a few, mechanics, sound, light, meteorology, heat etc. are the fields covered by science park gadgets. Apart from pure science, Mathematics, Applied Science, Geography etc., are also covered in these interactive exhibits.

Drama Troupe

          Our school "Vivekananda Kalai Kuzhu" enacted a Tamil Drama "Velippaduvom Viduthalaiyadaivom" on 09-02-2013 in the Sports Day function of our Home.

Junior Red Cross & Scout

         Junior Red Cross team and Vivekananda Scout Troop are functioning in this school. On 5-6-2012 Environmental Day Celebration held at Savitriammal Oriental Hr. Sec. School, Mylapore 12 JRC boys took part in Essay Writing and Drawing competitions E.P.Gunaseelan of 9th std won 3rd prize in essay competition. Sri V.Balasubramanian, B.T.Asst. attended 3 days counselors training held at Red Cross Building, Egmore, Chennai-8. 12 of our JRC boys took part in Geneva convention competition held at P.S.High school, Chennai-4. Five JRC boys and Muliki Kameswariah counseller took part in 3 days district level camp of JRC at Arignar Anna Govt Hr. Sec. School, Adyar, Chennai. Fifty of our students particiapated in the "Green Energy Virumbuvom" Drawing and Essay competitions conducted at school level and District level and 22 of our juniors were awarded with school level certifictes and 11 juniors were awarded with district level certificates.

         On 6-7-2012 Sri E.Sridhar and 32 Scout students took part in the Scout Inaugural function held at Church park Mat. Girls He. Sec. School. Sri E.Sridhar and 12 boys attended 3 days annual camp at Tonekala, Avadi, Chennai. For Rajya Puraskar award 3 days camp was held at Perambur test camp hobby centre and 12 of our scout students took part.

NCC Naval Unit :

          There are 50 cadets from our school in the Naval unit. Monthly 4 parades are conducted.

          From 17-08-2012 to 27-08-2012 R.D.C camp was held at Avadi Vel Engineering College and 49 of our NCC boys and our ANO, Second Officer Mr.R.Kamalesh attended the camp. Besides the same team participated in the coastal cleaning programme conducted by NCC. This year "A" certificate exam conducted by NCC for our NCC boys, was held in our school.

Literary and Cultural Competitions :

         In the Inter School competition conducted by Geetha Bhavan(Gopalapuram) G.R.Bhalaji of 10th standard got special prize in solo songs(Vocal); in-group songs(Bhajans) our boys got second prize. In the science exhibition conducted by Ganapathy Iyer High School, Gopalapuram, our school 6th standard boys Sanjay and Vadivel got first prize for their exhibit and got Rs. 1000/- cash prize. In the science exhibition conducted by Central Chennai Educational Department B.Vetriselvan of 8th std and M.Gowrishankar of 8th std got special prize.

         On 3-7-2012 five of our students took part in the Bhajans competitions conducted by Gandhian Trust and got first prize. In the childrens day celebrations Chennai Educational District conducted interschool Tamil oratorical competition and M.Karthikeyan of 10th std got 2nd prize. He received the prize from Minister for Education, Tamil Nadu Government. In the drawing competition conducted by Science City, M.Pramodkumar of 10th std got special prize. G.R.Bhalaji of 10th Std was given an inspired award of Rs.5000/- for 2012-13 from the Science and Technology centre, Chennai. Bhumi siragugal conducted competitions for inter hostels and our hostel boys got many prizes and overall chamionship.

Sports & Games

         On account of 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda our school was given this year the responsibility to conduct the Central Chennai A Zonal sports and games events in different schools in Chennai central area. Our school junior and senior teams particiapted in various sports and games events conducted at zonal level, central district level and divisional level and won many prizes. E.Suresh of X standard was selected to participate in the state level Athletic meet.

Excursions

  1) During the last academic year VI & VII class students were taken for an excursion to Kanchipuram, Chengalput and Mamallapuram.
   2) VIII and IX standard classes went to Thiruvannamalai and Gingee.
   3) Our school 10th standard students were taken on pilgrimage to Thirupathi and Kalahasthi.
